For the thirteen-to-nineteen crowd

A Teen Birthday Invitation That Does Not Try So Hard

The teenager wants a page that looks like nothing happened. You want a headcount. A plain design, a music link and a reply button keep both of you out of the argument.

    Two briefs, one invitation

The teenager's requirements are short. No baby photographs, no exclamation marks, no cartoon, and absolutely no chance that a screenshot of this goes round the year group with a caption. Your requirements are also short: whether there will be twenty or fifty people in the house, who is driving them home, and whether the food you bought is enough.

These do not conflict. A clean page with real information reads well to a fourteen-year-old and answers to a parent, which is more than a poster in the class group manages. The trick is to let the design be quiet and let the details do the talking.

How to keep it from looking like a children's party

The design decision does most of the work before a single word is read.

    • Choose a plainer design from the dozens available and let the typography carry it. Confetti is optional at every age.
    • One photograph, or none. The birthday person's face across a banner is the fastest route to embarrassment.
    • Short sentences, no exclamations, and no phrase such as let us celebrate this milestone directed at a person who is thirteen.
    • A playlist or song request line, which is the section the guests actually open.
    • House rules stated once and quietly: what time it ends, who is doing pick-ups, whose parents are on the list.
    • A password, so the link stays inside the invited group rather than travelling through the school.

Wording that reads like a normal message

Written with the teenager in the room, which is the only way any of this gets approved.

    Dry
Friday, 7pm onwards. Casa first, then the flat. Tell me yes or no by Wednesday.
    Dry, with food
Saturday 4 to 10, my place. Pizza at seven, music on the speaker, cake at nine whether you like it or not.
The one that names the parent problem
My mother is in the spare room and will not come out. If you need a lift home at midnight, put your name on the reply.
    For the older end
Eighteen is legally boring, so we are doing the rooftop instead. Six o'clock, dress for the weather, reply so we can book the tables.

What the page handles while you stay out of it

    Replies with names on them

A yes arrives with the guest and, inside the limit you set, the plus-one they asked about. Nobody has to telephone you to negotiate.

The number you can budget for

Twenty or forty is a different quantity of food, and the list tells you which one on the Thursday rather than on the Saturday evening.

    Song requests

Guests add tracks before they come, so the queue for the evening is not built by whoever shouts loudest.

    Reminders, without you

Two days out, the people who have not answered get a nudge from the page rather than a message from their friend's mother.

    The chaperoning question, said plainly

There is usually a grown-up in the building, and the invitation is where you say how that works rather than leave it to interpretation. One sentence does it: my parents are downstairs and I promised them ten o'clock. Or, for the older crowd, the flat is ours and the building's quiet hours start at eleven.

Guests behave differently when the rule was written down before they arrived, and the parents reading the same link stop sending you messages about it.

    How it works

Let the teenager read it before you send it

Draft it with Jitabi or Clara

Describe the party and keep the tone the teenager agreed to: Saturday, six until eleven, twenty people, music, no games. The draft comes back with the sections filled in and you cut anything that sounds like a grown-up wrote it.

Choose the plainest design you can find

Browse the birthday designs and pick the one nobody would screenshot for fun. Add the running order, the address, the end time and the song request section. Nothing a guest can reach exists until you publish.

Send the link, and the password, to invited people only

The invitation goes to the names on your list and the password travels with it. That is how a party page stays the size you planned instead of the size a forwarded link becomes.

Watch the number and let the day run

Replies arrive with plus-ones inside your limit. On the Saturday the countdown and the directions are doing their work, and the reminder to non-responders has already gone out.

    Questions

Common questions about teen birthday invitation

Whose name goes on the invitation, mine or my child's?

Whichever party the guests will recognise as theirs. If the list is the teenager's friends, the wording is theirs and your telephone number sits underneath as the one to call about the lift home. If you are hosting it, write it as yours.

Can I stop the invitation being forwarded to the whole year group?

Password-protect the page and send the password to the people you invited, along with the link. Anyone who finds the address without it gets nothing. It also helps to say in the invitation that the list is fixed.

How do plus-ones work when I do not know the partners?

The reply carries them: a yes with one plus-one inside the limit you set, and the guest types the name themselves. You see the real number before the day and can tighten the limit if the house is too full.

Do the guests have to install anything to reply?

No. The link opens in the browser on their phone. They tap yes, say who is coming, add a song request, and finish. There is nothing to download, which is why more of them answer than would bother with a form.

What if the party has to finish early?

Edit the end time on the page and save. The link everyone already has shows the new time, which is a far better option than a group chat message that three quarters of them will not read until Monday.
